Meet Alex – Development
What is your role at Decisely?
Director of Software. I direct software to do exactly what the company needs.
What do you love about your job at Decisely?
I love the culture and people here. It is what drives me to come to the office every day, even though I do work from home sometimes. Being around other nerds like me is a lot of fun!
What was your first job?
My first job was with a Belorussian company that made software for local banks.
That job was part-time while I was studying atomic physics full-time at the Belorussian State University. This is when I first dove into the development culture. I loved it so much, I decided to not become a physicist and became a software developer instead.
What was your worst job?
I never had a “worst job," really! Can’t think of any job that I didn’t love.
Where would you live if you could live anywhere in the world?
Salt Lake City, Utah! It is perfect for a person like me: lots to do outdoors. My family traveled a lot. We lived in Ukraine, Germany, Russia and Belarus. I traveled a lot myself, and I absolutely love Utah and definitely want to die here, hopefully many… many years from now.
Last question – people would be surprised if they knew what about you?
I used to work for a company that rented their office space in a very old building. We had about 50 people on the floor, and most of them were males. There was only one stall in the male bathroom, and it was impossible to get in. Often, you would come back to see that someone else already “reserved” the spot, so I fixed it.
I bought a door sensor, hooked it up to a Raspberry PI (a small computer) and built an app to notify people when the toilet became available. Literally everyone was using it within days. I was getting high-fives from total strangers in the hallways. 😊
